The following persons may apply for the restoration of Latvian citizenship:

  • Latvian exiles and their descendants,
  • descendants of the citizens of Latvia.
     

A Latvian exile is a person who meets the following conditions:

  • was a citizen of Latvia on 17.06.1940 (or is a descendant of a Latvian citizen),
  • in the period from 17.06.1940 to 04.05.1990, he left Latvia or was deported (sent to a special settlement) from Latvia,
  • for the reasons mentioned above, he did not return to Latvia for permanent residence until 04.05.1990.
     

Descendants born before 10/01/2014 can receive Latvian citizenship.

Exiles, registering Latvian citizenship, have the right to retain their existing citizenship.

A descendant of a Latvian citizen is:

  • a person at the time of birth of which one of the parents is a citizen of Latvia. At the same time with the applicant, Latvian descendants under the age of 15 can receive Latvian citizenship,
  • a person who had the right to register as a citizen of Latvia until 01.10.2013 in accordance with the terms of paragraph 1 of Article 2 of the Citizenship Law, ie, a person who was a citizen of Latvia on 17.06.1940, or his descendant.
     

The descendants of the citizens of Latvia to obtain Latvian citizenship must renounce their current citizenship.
